Early Use of Amniotic Membrane in the Treatment of Burn Patients

Abstract
To evaluate the effectiveness of amniotic membrane application in burn wound dressing, 46 cases of second-degree burn patients were studied during the 36 months period from January 1980 to December 1983 at the Department of Surgery, Chonnam University Hospital, Kwangju, Korea.
The patients were divided in two groups; 24 cases were treated with amniotic membranes and 22 cases treated without application of amniotic membranes as a control group. The results were summarized as follows;
1) The sex ratio of male to female was 1.4: 1.0 in applied group and 2.0: 1.0 in non-applied group. The prevalent age in both groups was first decade.
2) 43 cases out of 46 were scald burn and no significant difference was noted between two groups regarding the etiology.
3) In terms of the extent of burn there was no significant difference between two groups. 4) Regarding the date of amniotic membrane application, 12 cases were applied within one day, 8 cases in second day, and 4 cases in third day.
5) Infection developed in two cases (8.3%) in applied group and 8 cases (36.4%) in non-applied group.
6) Reepithelialization was completed within two weeks in all cases of applied group and in 14 cases (53.6%) of non-applied group.
7) Early relief of pain and no rejection phenomenon or allergic reaction was observed in all cases of applied group and control of oozing in most cases.
